A boy is stranded at sea. A storm bears down on him, and, in what he believes are his final moments, he ponders his life and the choice he made to come here—to explore what’s over the curious horizon—and wonders: Was this a mistake? There once was a boy… is a fun, poetic performance for tweens, teens and their whānau. This live “pop-up book” explores curiosity, courage, and finding light in the darkness.

Recommended for audiences aged 10+. Contains flashing lights.

About Rob

A graduate of Toi Whakaari with a rich background in theatre and film, Rob Lloyd has spent years collaborating on productions across Aotearoa. Now, he’s stepping into the spotlight with his first original work.

Artist thank yous:

Robert would like to warmly thank…

Sally Richards for allowing me an opportunity with this residency to create and sink my teeth into this project and work at the craft that drives me. Also her tireless support throughout the process.

Kerryn Palmer for her continued guidance and mentorship including dramaturgy, structure, direction, and all round positive support. Especially in these latter stages of development. This piece wouldn’t be as strong without her.

Aileen Davidson for her willingness to jump on board and help shape this piece with her knowledge, her heart, and especially her fun. She allowed me to play and discover and these characters and their warmth are alive because of her.

Anne-Lisa (Al) Noordover for her ability to be not only on the same page with me immediately but to add so much character into the design element it would not have the same colour and vibrancy it does. She works with such passion and creativity. I look forward to working with her in the future.

Nathan Arnott for his passionate work ethic. He had a mountain to climb in designing the sound for this piece and he did so with a very engaged heart and was always willing to listen to my ideas, but also added alot of his own which made this collaboration with him an absolute joy.

Emma Mcguire for coming in very late to the piece and jumping in like they had been there all along and moving with the phonetic pace of the project. They did this with an ease and calm of a professional and very much helped us build the all important character of lighting.

Isadora Lao and Alex Dixon for their continued work and constant support around Bats. They do a lot of the unseen important work that is so valuable when putting up these projects.

Grace Hoete and Toi Pōneke for allowing me the space to work, explore, and create. Thank you to all there that helped me along this process.

Craig Sengelow for welcomingly helping us record music and narration in his very cosy studio.

Jaime McCaskill for his script writing expertise and insight at the early stages of this development. Also for his ever encouraging words.

Miria George, Tanea Heke, Angie Farrow, Fergus Aitken, Kenny King, Natala Gwiazdzinski for their strong letters and bios, and also ongoing tautoko, that supported the application for this project.

Note from Kerryn Palmer — Director PAYPA (Performing Arts and Young People Aotearoa):

There Once was a Boy is a first development showing of an imagined bigger show for young audiences. Grappling with themes of what it means to be alive, the endless, unanswerable questions we ask as young people:  Where does the sun go when it sets? Where do we go when we die? What does it mean to be alone?  The poetry of Rob's writing leans into a magical, nonlinear form of storytelling familiar to those who spend time with children.

The show has yet to be tested with a young audience, and we look forward to getting feedback from our 10-12-year-old target audience, in particular at Petone Central School, where we had a great initial session. Rob has worked tirelessly, often solo, on the script, the performance, and the music. He has held the vision strongly throughout and I am excited about the potential of the show, in particular with the design. There has been amazing progress by Anne-Lisa, (Set), Nathan (Sound), and Emma (Lighting) in a very short space of time, and it’s exciting to think what the show will become with a full team. Thanks to TAHI Festival and Toi Pōneke for their awesome ongoing commitment to excellent theatre for young people. PAYPA has welcomed this residency in its ongoing mahi to make excellent performing arts  accessible to  all young people throughout Aotearoa.
